Air Zimbabwe Strengthens Comeback With Return of Harare-Johannesburg Flights

By Dickson Bandera

HARARE — Air Zimbabwe is stepping up its revival drive with the return of scheduled flights between Harare and Johannesburg from August 19, further strengthening the national airline’s regional network as it rebuilds its position in the African aviation market.

The airline will operate the Harare–Johannesburg route three times a week, with services on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

On Sundays, flights will depart Harare at 14h35, arriving in Johannesburg at 16h20. On Wednesdays and Fridays, departure from Harare will be at 11h30, with arrival in Johannesburg scheduled for 13h15.

Return flights will leave Johannesburg at 16h55 on Sundays, arriving in Harare at 18h40. On Wednesdays and Fridays, the Johannesburg departure will be at 14h00, with the aircraft scheduled to arrive in Harare at 15h30.

The restoration of the Johannesburg service comes at an important moment for Air Zimbabwe, which is increasingly demonstrating signs of renewed activity after years of financial and operational challenges.

The Johannesburg route is strategically important. South Africa remains one of Zimbabwe’s biggest markets for business, tourism, trade and family travel, while Johannesburg serves as a major regional aviation and commercial hub.

The latest development also comes shortly after the national carrier’s return to the Harare–London route, signalling an increasingly ambitious phase in Air Zimbabwe’s recovery.

From national carrier to revival

Air Zimbabwe’s story is closely intertwined with Zimbabwe’s post-independence development. The airline emerged from the former Air Rhodesia structure following independence in 1980 and became the country’s national flag carrier, connecting Zimbabwe with destinations across Africa and beyond.

At its peak, Air Zimbabwe operated an extensive regional and international network, including services to London and other major destinations.

The airline later endured prolonged financial difficulties, operational disruptions and fleet constraints that resulted in the withdrawal of a number of routes. These challenges significantly reduced its presence in the regional aviation market.

But the carrier has continued efforts to rebuild.

The resumption of London services and now the return to Johannesburg represent important steps in restoring the connectivity that once made Air Zimbabwe a prominent player in African aviation.

For travellers, the Johannesburg relaunch offers another direct option between Zimbabwe and South Africa. For the airline, it provides an opportunity to rebuild passenger confidence, strengthen revenue-generating regional operations and reconnect with one of its historically important markets.

The latest expansion is therefore more than the restoration of a route.

It is another indication that Air Zimbabwe is seeking to reclaim its place in the skies, rebuilding its network one strategic destination at a time.

With Harare–Johannesburg returning on August 19 and Harare–London services already back on the schedule, attention will now turn to whether the national carrier can sustain the momentum and continue expanding its regional and international footprint.
